There are many reasons that a ductless heating and air conditioning minispilt might be perfect for you. Here are 4 of them.
1. So Efficient! It Does Not Lose Energy
When you shop for air conditioning, you may find ductless and ducted systems that are rated similarly for energy efficiency. (The SEER rating, it’s called). However, in practice, a central a/c system will lose energy—as much as 30%—while moving through the ductwork. Leakage of cooled (or, in winter, heated) air due to improper sealing and through conduction due to insufficient insulation are the chief culprits.
2. Easy Installation
It can go into tight spaces—the indoor air handler usually gets mounted up on a wall, out of the way. The outdoor compressor can sit on a small platform or cinder blocks (you’ll want it up off the ground away from snowpack), and it needs just a small hole in the wall to connect the 2 parts. Installation is usually accomplished in less than 1 day.
While it may seem a little pricey at first glance (in the $2,500 neighborhood for the most part), remember that this baby heats AND cools, and runs for considerably less than your fossil-based heating unit or your old, inefficient window A/C unit. The value they offer is huge. Which leads us to what may be the most important reason of all.
4. Green Heating & Cooling
Heat pumps are extremely energy efficient and run on electricity, not carbon-based fuels. You can use your heat pump to offset your oil or gas furnace, so it won’t run as much. The new cold climate heat pumps by Mitsubishi that we sell here in Vermont, work down into double digits below zero, and don’t contribute to climate change. Isn’t that the nicest reason of all?
